Back Stage Pass Diaries:: Kumasi in the Studio

"The "Bouazizi" song is the most honorable song I have ever collaborated on, even over songs with the likes of Kanye West, Mos Def and The GAME.  There is a lovely and strong spirit that goes with this song.  All Glory be to The MOST KIND."  -Kumasi  [Tunisian Revolution Tour]

Creme De La Ultra: Mark Ultra musings . . .

HOOD-winked & Bam-BOOZE-led?

Dear Reader,
This is NOT a rambling glorification of the "Golden Era" of Hip Hop . . . thousands of those already exist.  This is a motion detector and a burglar alarm going off into the night . . . problem is, nobody's home to stop it.  Too abstract? Let me explain . . . in the past, what did your favorite rap/alternative  albums all have in common? With the exception of LL CooL J and say, Billy Idol, ALL the albums were by GROUPS . . . there weren't many solo artists.  And what were the major labels famous for in those days when dealing with "groups?"  They were famous for trying to break them up.  How? By tempting the lead singer or star player into going solo for more fame & riches.
Now, in today's market, if I ask you to name your favorite rap, rock, or alternative songs (or just the ones you know) you would most likely name SOLO artists . . . so is that natural, or has the progress of our musical craft been altered?  Have we been commercially tampered with?  YES.  So what? That's just the beginning . . .

Back Stage Pass Diaries:: Tunisian Tour Break to Visit Carthage

"On rare occasion, the band gets a small break from sound check, performances, and workshops at schools, orphanages and universities to visit historic sites . . . Anas and the guys kicked it hard in the ruins of Carthage . . . did you know Carthage has existed for almost 3,000 years? Anas and the guys were really into the history, especially during the time of Hannibal and the Second Punic War . . . "

Back Stage Pass Diaries:: Rapping with "Empire"

By Tracy, Remarkable Current Tour Manager

Tunisian hip hop group "Empire" opened up for Remarkable Current
twice during the Tunisian Revolution Tour
I thought they were sweet guys with mean rhymes & a part of thriving hip hop movement in Tunis.  They also joined RC in the studio to collaborate on the song "Bouazizi" that was written & produced by DJ Anas Canon, and threw down some inspiring lyrics for the track in French:

We call on for democracy, always the same, Tunisia, today, … wakes up!

Wait a sec . . . Empire just emailed me . . . we've been keeping in touch since returning from North Africa . . . here's what they said when they found out that RC plans to release the song soon:

"We are also happy to hear that the song "Bouazizi" is ready!  There was a positive message through the song and that's what motivated us & connected all of us.  ''Bouazizi'' a martyr, as a symbol of peace, as a call for justice, gave us the power & feelings that bridged the gap between us and that's what totally impacted our collaboration with Remarkable Current . . . the experience was very rich and an opportunity to acknoledge new things about the culture of hip hop.  One another important thing is that we won a true fraternity with Azeem, Kumassi, Anas & Erik - they are really worthy of much respect & we hope this experience will open doors for more collaborations.  Much Respect & Peace to the Hip Hop Ambassadors!
